"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the sister act will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
