As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
