At least 6 people have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a armed forces enlistment event held in a stadium in Ghana.

The Wednesday's "devastating" incident seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," stated a release from Ghana's armed forces.

22 additional individuals were injured, including 5 who are in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the armed forces.

Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events typically draw massive gatherings and frequently lead to chaotic scenes.

The closing date to apply for this recruitment was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as some had experienced challenges in the process.

Army spokesperson Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place before the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the injured in hospital.
